Susan Rothenberg, renowned for her expressive Western landscapes and animal, especially horse, paintings, studied at Cornell University and spent her early career in New York. In 1990, she moved to New Mexico, where she lives with artist Bruce Nauman, drawing inspiration from the surroundings. Rothenberg, influential since the 1970s, began as a 'new imagist' painter, blending abstraction and representation. Her iconic figures, focused on light, color, and surface, are closer to Minimalism than realism. Works like 'Four Color Horse' subtly depict horses, while others, like 'Ring Necks, Covering', are more explicit. Rothenberg received awards like the 1979 NEA Fellowship Grant and 1998 Skowhegan Medal for Painting, with museum retrospectives and works in global public collections.
